Oregon became the 33d state on February 14, 1859. It encompasses a land area of great topographic diversity and scenic beauty and its economy has traditionally been based on agriculture and the exploitation of its vast forests. In the 1990’s manufacturing and services industries became very important.
Oregon is a wonderful state. Moving to Oregon can be an exciting move for anyone. Oregon, with an area of 98,386 sq mi, is the ninth largest state in the U.S. There is 52.3% of the land area in Oregon owned by the federal government, making the states recreational areas plentiful. Elevations range from sea level to 11,239 ft atop Mt. Hood. Oregon’s coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 296 mi.

The geography of Oregon ranges from the Columbia Plateau to the Great Basin and its many mountain ranges, natural lakes and rivers make the scenery a stunning part of Oregon. The largest river in Oregon is the Columbia River and beautiful Cascade Lake lies in the crater of an ancient, extinct, volcano. Oregon has more standing commercial timber than any other state than Alaska. The state boasts both land and marine wildlife.
The climate in Oregon varies. Western Oregon has an equable, humid climate, dominated by marine influences while the eastern part of the state is dry and continental, characterized by greater daily and seasonal temperature extremes. In coastal areas the average temperature of the coldest month is only fifteen degrees lower than the warmest month. Eastern Oregon is semiarid, as the Cascade Range prevents moist air masses from moving inland.
According to the 2000 census, Oregon had 3,421,399 inhabitants. The largest cities in the state are Portland, Eugene, Medford, Salem (the capital), Gresham and Beaverton.

Oregon public schools began back in 1849 with the passage of the Nathan Dane Act, which provided funds to establish an educational system for Oregon. By the 1990’s Oregon had 1190 elementary and secondary schools with a combined annual enrollment of 340,300 elementary students and 132,000 secondary students. Some 35,000 students attended private schools. Oregon, during this same period, had 46 institutions of higher education, including the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon State University in Corvallis and Pacific University in Forest Grove.

There are cultural institutions such as the Portland Art Museum, the Oregon Historical Society Museum, and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry all located in Portland.
Oregon’s national forest, which cover much of the state, together with its scenic ocean shoreline, mountains, rivers, and lakes, furnish ideal conditions for such outdoor activities as boating, fishing, swimming, camping, hiking and mountain climbing. Horseback riding and golfing are popular, as is skiing. The major ski areas are located around Mt. Hood, Mt. Bachelor, and Mt. Ashland. Oregon is the home of the professional basketball team, the Portland Trailblazers.
Oregon’s transportation system includes interstate highways that traverse the state, local roads that serve all sections, marine and river ports, and numerous airports with Portland International Airport being the largest. Their inner city transportation system is highly regarded.
