Nevada, with an area of 110,567 sq mi, is the seventh largest state in the U.S. Nearly all of Nevada lies within the Great Basin, or Basin, or Range, region. The topography consists of numerous mountain ranges, parallel valleys, and mesas and buttes.
With its varied topography, Nevada has wide variation in weather; bright sunshine, little precipitation in the valleys and deserts, heavy snowfall in the mountains, and wide daily ranges of temperature. Winter snowfall is heaviest in the Sierra Nevada.
A public school system was established in 1864. In the late 1980s Nevada had 331 public elementary and secondary schools with a combined annual enrollment of about 137,500 elementary pupils and 49,400 secondary students. About 9200 students attended private schools. There has been growth but recent numbers are unavailable. Many of Nevada’s museums exhibit Indian crafts and artifacts and relics from the early mining days. Among these are the Nevada State Museum, the Northeastern Nevada Museum, the Sheppard Fine Art Gallery, the Railroad Museum, and the Harrah Foundation National Automobile Museum. The Nevada Opera Association is based in Reno.
Nevada’s climate lends itself to such outdoor activities as golfing, swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, horseback riding, and hunting. Skiing facilities are located in the Reno-Lake Tahoe area. Of special note is the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Nevada offers a great variety of scenic attractions. Beautiful Lake Tahoe, Boulder Canyon, and vast expanses of desert and mountain landscapes, mining towns, ghost towns and the recreational facilities of Lake Mead are just a few of these attractions.
