Illinois is a wonderful state. Moving to Illinois can be an exciting move for anyone. Illinois entered the Union on Dec. 3, 1818 as the 21st state. Illinois is the 25th largest state consisting of 57,918 sq mi, which includes 2325 sq mi of inland water. Illinois is known as the Prairie State. Elevations in the state range from 279 ft to 1235 ft.
The weather in Illinois varies considerably from season to season. Most of the state has a humid continental climate with long summers and cold winters. The frost-free growing season lasts about 120 to 180 days.
According to the 2000 census, Illinois had 12,419,293 inhabitants. The state’s largest cities are Chicago, the nation’s third largest city, Rockford, aurora, Naperville, Peoria and Springfield, the capital. Manufacturing is the principal economic activity but farming and agriculture is still an important part of the economy, also.


In 1825 the state legislature established a public school system. In the late 1980s, Illinois had 4225 public elementary and secondary schools with a combined annual enrollment of about 1.280,000 elementary pupils and 517, 300 secondary students. Illinois has a number of cultural institutions, many of which are located in Chicago. There are the Lincoln Park Zoological Gardens, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum, a museum of natural history, the Museum of Contemporary Art and many others. Chicago has a symphony and a ballet.
Many of Illinois’s historical sites commemorate American Civil War battles and personalities. There is the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, the Fort Creve Coeur State Park and the Ulysses S. Grant Home to name a few.
Illinois’s lakes, rivers, and parks offer varied opportunities for hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, hunting, and winter sports. Illinois attracts 36 million travelers annually. Chicago is the home of such major professional sports teams as the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs (baseball), the Chicago Bulls (basketball), the Chicago Bears (football), and the Chicago Blackhawks (ice hockey).
Illinois is located at a major transportation crossroads of the U.S. They have a superb transport system. Roads, railroads, buses and airports, with O’Hare International Airport in Chicago being the busiest in the U.S., are all an integral part of the Illinois transportation system.
