Colorado became the 38th state on August 1, 1876. It is the 8th largest state consisting of 104,094 sq mi including 376 sq mi of inland water. The highest point in Colorado is Mt. Elbert at 14,433 ft. 36.4% of Colorado’s land mass is owned by the federal government making the states recreational area’s plentiful.
